Bed Decor That Won't Fall On Your Head

Here are 8 ideas for stylish headboard decor that aren't dangerous!

We all want that giant, beautiful painting above our bed, but there are some instances wherein that isn’t the safest decorating option (for example: very thin gypsum). But you don’t have to settle for a bare bedroom—here’s are some decorating ideas that are super-safe.

1. Mural


Toto and Pierra Labrador’s former bedroom makes use of a colorful mural (painted by friends) as a graphic “headboard.” Another idea: hang a beautiful textile behind your bed.

2. Sunbursts


A trio of tiny sunburst mirrors creates a delicate focal point in this navy blue bedroom. You can buy sunbursts like these at Wilcon Depot.

3. Decorative objects


Stylist Donna Pita hung these gem-like decorative objects from Umbra mixed in with some lightweight framed prints. You can get Umbra items from Dimensione.

4. A stylish “accident”


This midcentury modern house had an exposed wire snaking from the wall lamp to the outlet. The homeowner took advantage of the “mistake” by highlighting the wire with painted molding. It now gives the wall a unique, graphic touch.

5. Hanging plants


DIY maven Amber Folkman took indoor gardening one step further by making these plants into her headboard, by hanging them on a metal grid. If you do this at home, just make sure to bring these plants out every so often for sun.

6. Artwork shelf


Sometimes the odd column in a room can serve a good purpose, as is the case in this serene bedroom by Cherissa Ang. A built-in shelf serves as a headboard and as a handy display area for prints and artwork.

7. Stickers


The wide variety of stickers available in home depots and bookstores make for cute and ultra-safe wall treatments for children.

8. Wallpaper


A dramatic swathe of patterned wallpaper is sometimes better than artwork. The width of a typical roll of wallcovering is enough to span the length of a bed.
