You know the drill: you go on a date with your sweetie, get caught for hours in Valentine’s Day traffic, and arrive to a packed restaurant with your reservation already canceled.

Why not save yourself some grief and throw an intimate (and since there’s no cooking involved—easy) wine and cheese date at home? Last month, Crate & Barrel Makati partnered with Juana Manahan Yupangco and Stephanie Zubiri-Crespi of Wine Lips (a blog that gives real-life, non-fussy advice about wine) and Beringer from Happy Living Wines to show us how easy it is to set it up and make the pairings.

Rule to break no. 1: You should serve specific wines for specific occasions.

Forget that nonsense about reserving the champagne for weddings. You can have bubbly whenever you feel like it—along with other wines—as long as you like the taste. See the illustrated guide above to learn about the popular wines and what they taste like.

Rule to break no. 2: You should always use stemmed wine glasses.

The common belief is that wine glasses are stemmed so that your hands won’t warm the wine. But a these Lulie Stemless Glasses from Crate & Barrel are a lovely option for casual gatherings and even picnics!

Rule to break no. 3: You should always serve champagne in a flute or a coupe.

Traditionally, champagne is served in wide-rimmed coupes or tall flutes, but if you don’t have either, a white wine glass would do. Using this narrower glass allows the bouquet and flavors of the champagne to come together. These Tour Wine Glasses are from Crate & Barrel.

Rule to break no. 4: You should always use extra-fancy cheeses for your cheese plate.

At the Crate & Barrel event, cheese types such as Camembert, Havarti, and Brie from Arla were served. The Wine Lips girls say that the trick is to “offer a variety of cheeses.” They suggest serving “one hard, one soft, one blue, and one wild card, which could be a goat’s cheese of smoked cheese.” These Slate Cheeseboards and Knife Set are from Crate & Barrel.

Rule to break no. 5: You should always serve wine and cheese before a meal.

The truth is, you can actually serve wine and cheese to finish off a meal. “Wine and cheese can be an appetizer and is also good for after meals, especially when some fruits are added to the combination,” says Liza Morales, Center for Culinary Arts’ Business Development and PR Director. When you pair the two together, “acidity, which gives wine its crispness on the palate, creates a nicely balanced mouth-feel when taken with fatty foods like cheese,” adds Morales. This just proves that regardless of the occasion, wine and cheese will always be a perfect combination.
