Arrange Flowers Like A Pro in 4 Simple Steps

Arm yourself with a pair of good scissors and get to work!


From picking out the flowers to prepping the tools you need, setting up an arrangement from scratch can be quite daunting. This is probably why homeowners always choose to go the easy route and buy pre-made bouquets from shops instead.

Believe it or not, even if you don't have a background in floristry, you can still create a striking display by following a few simple steps. Check out the easy guide below and discover that the process is just as rewarding as the finished product:

1. Prune the flowers properly. 

In order to keep the flowers fresh longer, make sure you cut the stems at a 45-degree angle and remove any foliage that may fall below the waterline. Feel free to trim away all extra leaves, thorns, or branches that take away attention from the flowers.

2. Create a base with foliage. 

Adding a touch of green at the base is important to create the illusion of an organic arrangement. You can use olive branches, lemon leaf, Italian ruscus or variegated lily grass and begin placing them in the vase in different directions to make it look natural.

3. Add a few accents with season-appropriate items. 

Keep your arrangement from looking plain by giving it some texture with more delicate blooms such as clematis and saponaria. If that's too dainty for your taste, consider adding long grasses, berry stems, or sour dock to give it a rustic feel.

4. Finish off with the bigger flowers. 

These larger blooms serve as the focal point of your arrangement so it's best to save them for last. Make sure to keep your display symmetrical by avoiding negative spaces or overcrowding—putting a rose on the left? Place one on the right, too. Are there eye-catching tulips toward the front? Try framing them with baby's breath.
