The bustling streets of Dangwa in downtown Manila are considered the place to buy fresh, affordable flowers. But navigating the crowded arteries of this bagsakan of flowers can be daunting, especially during the peak seasons of Valentines’ Day and All Saints Day.

Some tips: Leave the car at home (it’s notoriously difficult to find a parking spot in the area) and take a cab or commute via jeep, and shop early in the morning. Here’s a map to help you along:

1. Dangwa is named after Dangwa Tranco bus station along Dimasalang St. in the area. These buses unload blooms from Benguet, making it the main flower market (bagsakan) in Metro Manila.

2. La Taza Café at Laong Laan corner Dos Castillas St. makes for a delightful respite in the middle of chaotic Dangwa flower market. The bright bloom-themed accents against white walls make it a photogenic café (sometimes Tagalog movies are shot here), and the menu of Pinoy favorites like tapsilog and binagoongan is comforting.

3. Dimasalang and Dos Castillas make up the main selling streets of Dangwa (the major selling artery is Dos Castillas), with rows upon rows of stalls and open-air sidewalk flower vendors. Here, you can get mums for as low as *P150 a bunch, colorful gerbera daisies for P170 a bundle, and romantic carnations for P170 and up a dozen.

4. Along the middle of Dos Castillas St. is the Manila Flower Market, which is a covered, warehouse-type market where pasadya or customized arrangements are sold. It’s also a good place to duck into if it suddenly rains while you’re flower shopping.

5. The Hospital of the Infant Jesus is a landmark signaling that you are nearing Dangwa. For those commuting, you can take a jeepney from Quiapo to Dimasalang. Alight at the corner of Dimasalang and walk towards Dos Castillas St. Go farther down, and you’ll hit the ever-popular shopping haunt, Dapitan Arcade.

6. Another landmark—and spot for eating and bathroom breaks—is the Chowking branch at the corner of AH Lacson (formerly Governor Forbes; jeepney drivers still refer to the street as the phonetically pronounced “For-bes”) and Dimasalang.

7. Laong Laan, the street of the former train station, still has a few spots here and there that sell reclaimed wood and secondhand furniture pieces.

8. The Mercury Drug store at the corner of Laong laan and Forbes is another clean, well-lighted place to grab a drink or buy wipes.

9. The stretch of Dimasalang leading to the corner of Forbes has multiple rose vendors (the roses usually go for P170 and up per dozen), making it the perfect spot to go to before Valentine’s Day.
