8 Budget-friendly Tips for a Fun-filled Barkada Night

For a different kind of party, plan a video game night with your friends

Gone are the days when people hanging out in front of the television are quickly labeled as couch potatoes. These days, being in front of the TV could classify you as a bowler, a tennis player or even a rock star—as long as you have a gaming console in your living room!

Gaming consoles have gotten people out of their couches and on their feet. They have also created a whole new way to entertain. So hook up your devices, push back your couch, and invite your friends over for a good time!

Choose a theme

You can simply have a Wii night and play a lot of different games, or you can focus on one game for the evening. For our party, we chose a Super Mario Bros. theme.

You could also do an Olympic Night and have a bunch of sports-themed games! You can compete in individual events or partner up and tally your scores for the evening, with one big winner at the end of the night.

Pick out an area at home

The bigger the TV, the betterthis will enable your teammates to see the action onscreen, and encourage them to cheer you on as you play.

It's best if your chosen area has a sofa or a few chairs to start with, and enough space in front of the TV for all the Wii action.

Bring out stackable chairs

Stackable chairs can serve as additional seating options and can easily be set aside when not in use.

Set out floor pillows

Guests can lounge on comfortable floor pillows. Provide more throw pillows to make the space warm and welcoming.

Make a personalized invite

A cool, homemade invite can get your friends excited about the big event. Make an envelope that mimics a Wii controller and cut a window through the front.

Insert the invitation here so your friends will have to "press" a control button and slide the invitation out of its jacket to read it!

Prepare your outfits

Depending on your theme, you could ask guests to come in costume, or you could provide accessories for them.

For Olympic Night, you can provide jerseys, wristbands, caps, and other athletic gear. For Guitar Hero Night, have them come as their favorite rock star.

For Super Mario Night, have plain red shirts printed with "Team Mario" and plain green shirts printed with "Team Luigi" and distribute them before the games begin.

Opt for finger food

Set out easy-to-munch-on eats that won't leave your guests feeling stuffed; they'll need to feel like for another round of Wii action! Popcorn and chips are no-fuss options.

For our Super Mario-themed Wii party, we scooped popcorn into paper bags labeled with question marks-reminiscent of the "?" boxes in the popular video game. Another Super Mario-inspired snack? Mushrooms!

Hand out souvenirs

After your Super Mario Night, send guests home with a bag of gold coins-these are similar to those gold oblongs in the Super Mario bonus rounds.
