Aside from making your home a stylish space, it is also necessary to keep it a safe space to live in. Areas like the staircase need to be extra safe, especially if you have young ones running around. Let these six tips guide you in childproofing the stairs.

Keep these tips in mind:
  • Add a safety gate to prevent your child from running down the stairs. It’s advisable to place the safety gate at the top and bottom of staircases. Learn how to install your safety gate here.
  • Always ensure that your staircase has light switches at the top and bottom so that your children can clearly define each step.
  • When cleaning, as much as possible, try to avoid using wax. Consider using a damp cloth and a special mixture of water and vinegar to wipe off dust and dirt. This homemade mix dries instantly compared to wax. Learn how to create more homemade solutions here.
  • Make sure that the balusters are not more than four inches apart to prevent accidents. You may choose to install safety guards or screens as well.
  • Avoid clutter in your stairs. While you can use the stairs to display and organize your shoes, it's best to keep them in boxes under the stairs if there are little ones in the house to avoid tripping accidents.
  • Try using non-slip stair treads in your home to make going up and down the stairs safer. Non-slip treads have heavy duty materials that work well for wooden staircases.
