If you’ve been to the new wing of the UP Town Center in Quezon City, you must have noticed the interesting murals on the walls and ceilings. The colorful outputs were done by the students of UP Graphic or the Graphic Illustration Collaborate. UP Graphic is a university-wide visual arts organization from the University of the Philippines-Diliman based in the College of Fine Arts.

Tasked to add touches of color to the Ayala Mall, UP Graphic shares how the group was able to create the multi-hued scenery on the second floor of the UP Town Center:

1. UP Graphic was the only organization from the university commissioned to paint the murals at UP Town Center. Other visual arts and fine arts organization in the campus include the UP Artists’ Circle Fraternity, UP Iris, and the UP Association of Visual Communicators.

2. They were asked to create an image that reflects the UP culture. Coincidentally, the restaurants within the area are homegrown UP Diliman and Maginhawa Street favorites such as The Chocolate Kiss, Rodic’s, and Friuli.

3. UP Graphic showcased the UP experience in a whimsical and colorful way that's aligned with the org's vision. Kim Santiago, the group’s vice-president shared that illustration and design “can present significant insights on society, culture, and relations.”

4. The murals were designed by two of the organization’s own. “Though the painting of the mural was a group effort, the designs that were followed were made by Katrina Melo and Anton Romero.” Katrina designed the Street Food mural, while Anton worked on the Cat Ikot Jeep mural.

5. For the Street Food mural, Katrina wanted people to “look up, see their favorite street food, and be brought back to memories of eating fish balls with their friends, buying sorbetes as kids, or maybe having pancit canton and kwek-kwek for lunch in college.”

6. In addition, Anton wanted to “convey a sense of adventure and wonder” in his Cat Ikot Jeep mural design. He still managed to put a playful twist to an otherwise mundane jeepney ride by presenting the Ikot Jeep as a giant cat float.
