The Shabby Chic style is all about about mixing charming patterns with aged furnishings, to create a stylish, cozy, and feminine space. “The key factor in styling a shabby chic room is to play with patterns and timeworn layers,” interior designer Jean Suzanne Sy shares. Achieve a shabby chic home with the help of these four easy steps.

Play with light colors.

To achieve a shabby chic space, you must choose a pastel color palette. Try painting your walls white and accessorize with colors like rose pink, teal, periwinkle and turquoise. “White walls are essential in achieving the shabby chic look. White creates an overall harmony to the space, which works best with the look,” Jean shares.

Add vintage details.

Bring in furniture that are a bit weathered, like tables or cabinets that have a few scratches and dents. These pieces will help you add a homey feel to your shabby chic space.

RL Tip: Upscale your vintage dresser by painting it teal or orchid pink. Pastel colors are good choices.

Mix patterns.

The shabby chic style allows you to craft a unified design with different patterns, such as stripes, polka dots, or floral prints. The key is to work with the right color palette and texture. Colorful throw pillows and patterned cushions can work as great accents to a plain white wall.

Use architectural details as décor.

Do you have a winding staircase or wooden shelves? Use them as accents to create a contrasting hue. Highlight these pieces with a fresh coat of paint in the same shade as the prevailing color scheme to match your space. Look for vintage or country décor to perk up the shelves and walls.

Utilize indoor plants.

Indoor plants can transform your space into a refreshing area. Succulents work best in shabby chic rooms because they are decorative and easy to maintain.
