5 Ways To Maximize Space In A Small Kitchen

Trick the eye into having a bigger room with these ideas

From downsizing belongings to investing in compact furniture, more and more homeowners are starting to embrace tiny house living. However, one thing that remains to be a challenge with some are the cramped kitchens they are forced to work with. To help you maximize every inch of counterspace in your home, we've listed down five ways you can expand your cooking corner without any major renovations:

Utilize open storage.

Unlike bulky China cabinets or built-in cubbyholes, exposed shelving offers the sense of a bigger space as you can still see the back of the walls. However, since everything is out for everyone to see, make sure you keep your dishes in neat piles and your kitchen equipment clean.

Play with neutrals.

The easiest way to make the room appear larger is through the use of light colors. From beige to cream or off-white—drench your walls in these non-hues and pick out furniture within the same palette.

Focus on the details.

If you can't make adjustments on the layout or don't have enough room to move around furniture, you can still take away attention from the space being so small by creating detailed corners. Draw the focus to a charming set-up like a cozy breakfast nook (as seen in photo) or a mini indoor garden.

Set a focal point.

For those who want to go for a drastic upgrade, you can go for something bigger than small displays and go for an accent wall instead. Choose bright colors and patterned pieces to divert the attention of guests from the size of your space to your vibrant decor.

Go with a theme.

Whether it's retro, vintage-inspired, or coastal, decorating with a theme instantly makes a space. If you are not a fan of pastels, feel free to do go with dark colors—contrary to popular belief, they can extend spaces too by blurring the lines of where a room starts and ends.
