Maintaining a garden is fulfulling yet challenging. Given our daily tasks and other household chores, we sometimes forget to water plants and remove dried leaves.

Whether you have a full-blown garden or a mini green space, with just the right TLC, you can help it flourish. Landscape architect Abby Abiol shares these five helpful tips.

Choose your plants wisely

“Pick plants that are very hardy and drought tolerant like bougainvillea,” Abby shares. Opt for greens that can thrive in different weather conditions, given our weather as well as those that prosper in sand, soil, and hard soil. It's essential that you work with the right set of plants given our country's unpredictable weather and sometimes harsh climate.

Avoid watering plants in the middle of the day

It's best to water plants early in the morning or late in the afternoon when it's not that hot outside. Watering your plants in the middle of the day, when the temperature is transitioning from hot to cold, may damage its roots.

Give your plants some air

Do you have an indoor garden? Be sure that you regularly air them out to prevent fungal infection and shriveling of the leaves.

Opt for plants with rubbery texture

“Pick plants that are leathery to the touch. These are drought-tolerant and they can retain water," Abby explains. Succulents have gained such a huge market as these are easy to repot and care for.

Add some plants that grow in shade

Do you live in a condo? If you've always wanted to start a mini garden, you can work with plants that do not require direct sunlight. Peace lilies and spider plants are perfect for your indoor garden.
