Aside from serving as the special place where friends and families gather over good food and memorable stories, the dining area can also be used as a study corner, a makeshift work area, and an extension of the living room during parties.

To keep it functional and inviting, you can work on simple projects that can instantly lighten up the vibe of the space. Get your creative juices flowing and be ready for a little adventure with these ideas:

Updating the pieces that you already have is a budget-friendly way to give your dining area a new look. "Reupholster the chairs with a new fabric [and] you may likewise consider revarnishing the table to have a new wood shade or paint the base with a new color," suggests interior designer Anla Li-Tan.

Anla also recommends adding a faux floral arrangement as a lovely centerpiece. Aside from flowers and plants, you can also add interesting tabletop decor, candelabras, and other small accessories as part of the setup.

RL Tip: You may also use a bowl or basket of fruits as your centerpiece as well as a cupcake stand that you can fill with sweet treats and cute decor pieces.

Adding a pretty table runner is an easy way to give your dining table an upgrade and it won't cost much. Choose one with an interesting print or color that will complement your dining room's colors.

Proper lighting is important in the dining area for a good number of reasons. First, it can help you appreciate your food more (since you can see the colors, ingredients, and the like) and second, it can help set the mood for the gathering—whether it's a casual get-together or an intimate dinner.

Depending on the vibe that you want for your space, you can opt for quirky chandeliers or stylish drop lights.

Don't be afraid to try the mismatched look! Create an unexpected touch by switching things up in the dining room. "Consider changing the orientation of the dining table and switching your kabisera chairs for fully upholstered pieces or chairs with arms," shares interior designer Kimi Manuel.

If you're looking for pieces that you can add to your space, you can always drop by thrift stores and secondhand shops.

RL Tip: According to interior designer Elaine Isip-Tiangco, the challenge of the mismatched look boils down to how to put everything together. Achieve a cohesive look by making sure that the pieces still have unifying aspects. Click here to learn more.
