We have to admit—we're all guilty of dumping things we no longer use in the storage room or bodega. How many times have you transferred boxes of old clothes, magazines, and other knickknacks in a corner of the dim and uninviting room? Keep in mind that your storage room needs a dose of TLC, too. Turn it into a neat, organized, and functional part of the home with these tips:

1. Keep the area well-lit.

"Use an LED bulb so you can see everything clearly when you're inside the storage room," says interior designer Rod Lascano. Investing in the right lighting fixture can help you get tasks done easily, too.

2. Use proper shelving units.

Rod recommends using adjustable shelves that you can buy in hardware stores. "This way, the shelves are flexible when you store different items at different times. Also, separate dry items from wet ones, like bottles of cleaners and chemicals."

3. Label everything.

"Label all boxes and shelves properly. You'll easily find things if you know where they are. Clean out the room yearly so that old items don't stay in your bodega for a long time. It's important to purge out items especially for small bodegas," says Rod.

4. Set up a cozy nook.

Instead of sitting on the floor while rummaging through boxes of belongings, you can have a comfy nook where you can efficiently get tasks done. Simply add a chair and a floor lamp to complete the look. You can also place a hamper or a woven basket beside the chair as a receptacle for things you want to keep.

5. Keep it smelling fresh.

We're all used to the kulob smell many storage rooms have. Avoid this in your space by cleaning the bodega regularly and using home sprays. Choose a scent that's sweet and refreshing like mint, citrus, and lavender. With scents like these, you might want to stay in the storage room longer.

6. Prepare extra boxes and storage must-haves.

In order to maintain a clean and organized storage room, you need to be ready with boxes, file holders, and bins. You can use these to store important documents, tiny knickknacks, and other personal belongings.
