People always say less is more when it comes to decor. While that's true, that doesn't mean you always have to keep things to a bare minimum—sometimes, adding subtle but noticeable details can give your space a design boost you never knew it needed. To help you out, we've listed a few things that you can find in every home and how you can dress it up:

Add a ceiling medallion

If you want to add architectural interest to a space without the hassle of a major renovation, consider getting ceiling medallions. There are a lot of affordable options for it and they are quite easy to install, too. Pick a simple and timeless design so you don't have to change it when you want to give the rest of the room a makeover.

Use China as an alternative to planters

Give the usual clay pots an upgrade by using ceramic pieces instead. You don't even have to shop for new pieces—just take out the ones you have in storage that you never use. Repot your green wonders to their proper-sized dished and you're all set!

Add some character to plain doors

If you want basic doors to look a little more fancy, invest in crown molding. They add an extra style punch to any space and they add value to your home, too. If you aren't ready to shell out good money, try faux-crown molding instead.

Build tall bookcases

Got plain panels? Add shelves. Nothing cozies up a room quite like bookshelves—it gives off a vibe that you can hang out in there the whole day. You can always go with store-bought units that you can assemble yourself or have your neighborhood handyman build you a few rows.

Maximize table runners

Instead of using full-sized tablecloths, give your dining area extra oomph with an interesting runner. Aside from making your styled tablescape look more put together, these are a lot easier to clean, too.
