Vintage Treasures That Are Hiding In Your House

Keep your eyes peeled for these rare gems when poring through your lola's bodega or baul—these might even be collectibles!

As the saying goes: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. If you’re on a mission to redecorate your space without spending a ton on all-new objects, going the secondhand route is definitely a good option. Before hitting the markets of Kamuning and the side streets of Bangkal, consider first the attics, bodegas and basements you can rifle through (and possibly score some gems for free). Sometimes paying a visit to your parents’ home, the family’s ancestral house, or your grandmother’s attic can offer more than meets the eye. Here are the pieces to look out for.

Rugs.

Area rugs have never really fallen out of style, regardless of the decade. Homeowners today, however, may luck out by looking through old stores because the Persian and Middle Eastern rugs that were popular in the 70s and 80s are making a big comeback today. Grouped together patchwork style across a living room, or giving some depth to a wooden bedroom floor, they can up your chic levels instantly.

Paintings and old photographs.

Art that resonates with you doesn’t have to come with a big name or a hefty price tag. And mixing up your gallery wall of black and white photographs and calligraphy prints with old school paintings from decades ago can add depth and visual interest to your display. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ve got an Amorsolo hiding out in your ancestral home… and if not, digging through your grandfather’s stash and finding a photo of your great grandmother can still make for an interesting conversation piece.

Ceramics and other breakables.

Pinoys love their tchotchkes and what better way to fill up your shelves than with ceramic doodads that possess a unique, thrift store feel? Plus points for finding some vintage displays from your childhood. Even little objects can turn sophisticated when paired with the right mix of modern accessories, books, and even tech like speakers and media consoles.

Dinnerware.

Whether you’re charmed by antique teacups or are looking to infuse some That 70s Show vibes into your home, hunting through your grandma’s attic for dinnerware can be extremely productive. Who doesn’t need a couple more saucers or cocktail glasses for a party? Other great collectibles are complete cutlery sets (especially if they’re silver- or gold-plated), pre-war carnival glass, and enamel ware.

Childhood Toys.

Take a cue from The 40 Year Old Virgin and scour the shelves for some classics that could actually sell for a higher retail value through eBay or OLX. If sentimentality takes over, however, your old LEGO Millennium Falcon from the 1980s could make for a legitimately precious piece. Don’t throw away the boxes—those that are intact in its original packaging often command higher prices.

Now if you're on the other side of the fence and are thinking of getting rid of some of your household items, do a good deed and donate these to those in need. To know where to go, click here.
