Have you ever experienced spending hours at the hardware store, looking at thousands of paint swatches, only to find yourself leaving empty-handed? Choosing colors is already difficult as it is, let alone having an endless list of choices. To get the perfect hue for your home in a snap, try mixing your own shade! Don't know where to start? Let this step-by-step guide help you out:

1. Buy a high-quality white base paint.

White is the body of the paint. Even if you’re using cheap tinting colors, a high-quality base ensures a good consistency and coverage.

2. Buy the tinting colors.

These are basic hues you can buy at any hardware store. Always mix with white to get a lighter shade. Mix two or more basic hues to get another hue, like beige. To introduce subtle changes in the hue, mix a third color.

3. Mix a sample.

Get a small container the size of a quart or a pint. Fill half of it with the white base, don't fill it to the brim; leave room for the tinting colors. Pour in the tinting colors little by little. Stir with a long, one-inch thick rod every time you add a blob of paint. Observe how the color changes.

4. Test the mix.

Paint can darken as much as 1.5 times when it dries, so observe the final shade that comes out.

RL Tip: Paint it on a portion of the wall. The larger the test area, the better. Check in daylight and artificial light. Let the test portion dry and observe it at different times of the day and night.

5. Mix a batch.

When satisified with the color, estimate how much paint you need and mix in one batch. This ensures that the color will be consistent for the whole job.
