5 Tips In Organizing Your Bodega

Keep this area organized so you won't drown in a sea of clutter

Before living in a condo became popular, you can seldom find a house without a storage room or bodega. A separate area is devoted for housing all the family’s junk: the kids’ old textbooks, old appliances that no longer function, and seasonal décor, among others. While it is essentially a “dumping ground,” you can turn it into a clean and organized area, just like the other rooms in your house. Here are some tips:

1. Put a steel shelf where you can place your boxes and storage containers.

“Store often used items at eye-level, and the least used items below and up high. Use boxes, cubbies and tiered shelves to sort items—there are a lot of these available in the market,” says interior designer Erika Uichanco. You can find steel shelves and storage boxes at Handyman and True Value.

2. Give sufficient lighting to your bodega.

“Make sure to have bulbs in all the major areas of the bodega. A lot of homeowners add task lighting in hidden or poorly lit areas. Poorly lit storage areas provide no motivation to keep things organized.  Nobody wants to work or even enter a dark environment,” says Erika.

3. Assign specific spots for specific items.

“Make organization easier by using clear plastic storage boxes so you can easily see items. Putting labels on each box or basket can also make looking for items easier,” says Erika.

4. For Christmas ornaments and other seasonal décor, store them in their original packaging.

Wrap them in excess wrapping paper (those scraps that are left after all the gifts have been opened) to keep them safe from bumps and scratches.

5. Store Christmas lights and extension cords using carton toilet paper rolls.

This will keep them from being a tangled mess. It will also be easy for you to get them from storage if they are all neatly kept.
