Small space living has become a popular lifestyle choice in the last couple of years. Moving into a tiny home means having less bills to pay, less space to clean and less maintenance tasks to attend to—you can't lose, right?

However, there is one caveat to this journey—it can be quite difficult to adjust from having a traditional house to a more compact unit. If you've recently downgraded to a humble pad and you're feeling a little overwhelmed, here are a few tips that can help put your mind at ease:

1. Develop discipline when buying things.

Needless to say, it would be impossible to fit a traditional cabinet in a compact home. Instead, you need to create a structure for keeping your belongings. If you have too many clothes for the space you have allotted, consider building a capsule wardrobe or if you only have room for five pairs of shoes, you should probably avoid surprise sales.

2. Find a layout that works for you.

Aside from investing in transforming furniture and trading in bulky pieces, it is important to find a layout that suits your lifestyle. For example, if you like to squeeze in some writing before bed, it might be a good idea to keep your desk near your mattress. Feel free to keep changing things around until you’re happy with the flow of your space.

3. Stay on top of your pet’s needs.

While most small space dwellers choose not share space with furry friends, that doesn’t mean you have to do the same. However, to keep your home from becoming a mess, make sure you don’t skip pet-related chores like changing the litter daily, cleaning their eating areas, and giving them a bath at least once a week to prevent funky odors.

4. Make the most of your windows.

Drape your windows in a way that allows natural light and air to enter the home. Aside from keeping the home cool, it gives the illusion of a larger space. Try going for bright white curtains or sheer pieces for maximum effect.

5. Learn to love your tiny home.

Instead of seeing it as a horrific nightmare, try changing your perspective and look at your humble flat as an exciting challenge that you can win. After all, it is what it is—don't waste your energy by fighting against it.
