5 Tips For A Beautiful Indoor-Outdoor Space

Blur the boundary between the outdoors and your living area in the best possible way

There’s nothing more stunning than a space that blends the architectural elements of lush landscapes and daily living. It can’t get any better than having a well-designed home with nature as a backdrop—and, in a tropical climate like ours, a spot at home where you can take a nap in a cozy daybed while feeling the cool breeze in your hair is tough to beat. To help you bridge the indoor-outdoor divide, we've put together five tips that can help you enjoy the best of both worlds:

1. Determine its functions and features. Before you tackle the styling specifics, it’s important to ask yourself where will it be in your home and what you are going to use it for. If you’re thinking about building an al fresco dining spot, consider the room adjacent to your garden while you can tear down the wall between the bedroom and the pool for a relaxing sleeping space.

2. Install floor-to-ceiling windows. When it comes to indoor-outdoor spaces, the larger the windows, the better. This reduces the division between two separate areas and gives you more open space. If your budget allows, think about having large windows installed to help you make the most of the view outside and protect your home on days when the weather isn’t very good.

3. Stick to one type of flooring. In order to create a cohesive space, remember to choose flooring that can be used on the inside and outside areas. You can use materials like paving stone, concrete and printed clay tiles to keep it in tip-top shape, even during the rainy season.

4. Choose sliding doors over traditional passageways. If 100% glass panels make you feel uncomfortable, you can opt for sliding doors to bring back a little more privacy. These pieces are easy to maneuver when it comes to making your walls disappear during the day and closing them when it’s time for bed.

5. Don’t neglect roofing. Maximize your new hangout by making sure that the outdoor half has a proper cover. You can invest in a sturdy roof structure or a basic canopy so you’re able to use it—rain or shine.
