Improving the home is a continuous process that's fun and rewarding. Aside from installing new lighting fixtures, adding a few colorful pillows, and bringing in accessories, there's a lot that you can do to change the look of a space and keep it from being boring. Those who enjoy sprucing up the living area can count on new furnishings to keep it looking sleek, but if you're feeling inspired and would want to work on a new project, here are a few ideas to consider:

1. Conquer compact spaces with curved and recessed solutions.

When we visited this unit, the curved design of the living area instantly grabbed our attention. To keep the unit from being too boxy and make the living area cozy, interior designer Christian Banayad opted to add a curve on the ceiling and highlighted it with recessed lighting. Completing the look are neutrals, hints of yellow and blue, and woven accessories for a tropical feel.

RL Tip: For your own space, study how you can add a bit of drama and warmth to the space. Do you need extra lighting or warm yellow lights? You may also want to see if certain structures need to be concealed to create a streamlined look for your space.

2. Locate your storage units on one wall.

More often than not, the living area has multiple storage pieces like ottomans, tables, and shelves. If you're working with a tight space and would like to make the most of it, situate all items for storage on one side—similar to the what the designer and owners did in this 38sqm condo. Aside from the low cabinet used to hold the TV and other belongings, a wall-mounted open shelf also houses decor and books.

RL Tip: Low on storage space? Take your cue from this home by opting for a customized seating piece with hidden storage underneath.

3. Experiment with hints of black, copper, gold, and bronze.

Those who want to add an elegant and luxurious touch to the home can count on a few pieces in black and details in gold or bronze. Get started by experimenting with a black center table then sprucing it up with decor and accessories in gold or bronze. You may also want to choose pillow covers with gold patterns to liven up a neutral sofa.

RL Tip: Think that gold, black, and bronze are too much for your space? Use it in small doses! If you have a cabinet in the living area, replace the knobs with copper pieces. You can also choose a table lamp with a bronze base—when paired with a white lampshade, it makes for a sophisticated accent piece.

4. Build a window seat.

We know that to be able to make the living area inviting, it needs to be well-lighted and filled with comfy pieces. Maximize natural light and the window in your space by building a window seat. You can ask help from a trusted carpenter by opting for a built-in seating piece.

As an alternative, you can use the photo above as peg. Open the window and place a daybed or bench in front of it. Liven up the seating piece with a bunch of pillows and even a throw. Turn it into an instant reading nook by adding a floor lamp and a slim shelf for your books.

5. Make a statement with your wall accessories.

Nowadays, it's not enough to paint the walls in an exciting or unexpected hue. An ornate mirror can do the work or even a captivating painting. For your own space, you may want to work with a huge clock paired with whimsical wall decor like butterflies or a wooden piece reminiscent of twigs.

For wall decor you can add to your living area, drop by Crate and Barrel, SM Makati, Our Home, and MAV Furniture, Designmix Bldg., 59 Connecticut St., Greenhills, San Juan City.
