We all know the secret to a relaxing slumber—a comfortable bed, a homey ambiance, and a clutter-free room. While some would prefer to keep the bedroom simple and inviting, there are a few who’d prefer to have extra nooks within the space to maximize the area.

If you’re thinking about the same thing, here are five things you can do and add to your private space without losing its snug and welcoming embrace:

1. Add a window seat.

Whether you have a view of the neighborhood, a skyline, or even just your mini garden—it’s a plus that can make your bedroom unique. Maximize a window by building a window seat, add a cushion, and complete it with pillows. It’s the perfect spot for morning coffee and reading time, too.

RL Tip: Working with an awkward or extra corner like the one in the photo above? Consult with a carpenter to see how you can customize a seat. Make the most of it by adding niches below for storage.

2. Create a dining nook.

Are you the type who loves having quick snacks in the bedroom? Carve out a mini dining area by adding a round table and two chairs. Spruce up the table with a dainty centerpiece or a vase of flowers and dress it up with a runner that matches the palette of your private space to make the look seamless.

3. Add a study desk.

A sleek study table can serve as a reading area and workspace in one. Choose a desk that fits between your bed and the wall to make the most of the floor area. In this bedroom, we especially loved the white combo—giving the room a sweet, country feel. You can achieve the same warm ambiance by working with distressed pieces or painting your existing items white.

4. Carve out a home office.

Those who have blank spaces in their bedrooms may take inspiration from the photo above. The owners opted for customized pieces and an overhead cabinet to complete the area. Get started on your own corner by consulting with a professional to see how you can add a built-in table and a comfy chair.

RL Tip: As an alternative, you can also liven up this space with a floor-to-ceiling shelf filled with your favorite books and magazines.

5. Create a meditation spot.

Got ample space at the foot of your bed? Start your day right by doing breathing exercises and meditating. Liven up this part of your room with a shag rug or a printed area rug. Pair it with floor pillows and a low table for a relaxing Zen vibe.

RL Tip: Decorate the table with incense or scented candles.
