5 Small Space Ideas We Can Learn from a 22sqm Contemporary Unit

Mix-and-match bold and dainty details for an exceptional space

Nowadays, it’s not surprising to see big pieces in a tight and compact unit. Many homeowners are starting to think outside the box—matching multipurpose pieces with big ones to create an impact and make the home extra inviting and comfortable. While it’s easy to choose items according to a specific style, the challenge lies in how you style your space and where you’ll place the pieces to avoid a cramped look.

Take for example this 22sqm unit in Makati. Given the limited floor space, it seemed impossible to fit a huge bed, a storage center, and other valuables the owner needs. With the help of the TKSL Interior Design team, the tiny space became a timeless home—filled with details and essentials that are unexpected yet captivating. Here are five design and decorating ideas to keep in mind inspired by this lovely space:

1. Know where to place your big items.

When sourcing for pieces to add to your space, envision how it will look like and where you can display it. In this unit, the ornate mirror from Pampanga is an investment piece that serves as the focal point by the entryway. To keep the look seamless, well-selected décor and other accessories were added in the corner to create a vignette.

RL Tip: If you have an accent chair, consider placing it in a corner to achieve a reading or meditation nook.

2. Think of the smallest details.

Sometimes, the tiniest of details can make or break the look of a space. In this home, the design team worked with outlines using black paint to keep the unit from looking too dull and the walls flat. The same outlines can be seen on the other side of the home to define the entertainment and storage center. If you look closely at the bed, the padded headboard showcases a solihiya print to mirror the detail of the dining chair—these elements contribute to the overall cohesiveness of the unit.

3. Make the most of every inch of space.

Who would have thought that one can still fit a tiny reading corner or lounge area in such a tiny space? This nook proves that you don’t need much to be able to have a snug spot! A comfortable chair and a few fluffy pillows can transform the barest of spaces into a relaxing hub.

4. Be creative when combining areas.

To maximize the available floor area, many homeowners choose to combine two common areas to create an efficient space. In this unit, the owner enjoys the advantages of a dining nook and kitchen in one.

We especially loved how the chair can be kept under the counter—giving the owner enough space to move from one area to another. The counter also serves as extra prep space when cooking.

5. Always think ahead in terms of storage and style.

To achieve extra storage space for books, knickknacks, and other items—an open shelf was added above the counter. From this point, one can also see the Spanish tiles used as backsplash. These pieces were chosen to complement the brass details—creating a visual statement and a stunning cooking corner.
