5 Things to Love About a 48sqm Unit Designed by a Real Living Reader
Let this fall-inspired compact home inspire you to decorate your space
When we visited this charming condo unit designed by one of our readers, the first thing we noticed was the airy and open layout. While the overall look and well-curated pieces will surely leave guests in awe, it’s the story behind how it all came to be that makes it extra special.
Given the demanding hours of being an anaesthesiologist, the owner still managed to collect pegs, source for furniture, and stay on top of the renovation process. Aside from these commitments, she also coordinated with contractor Clarence Dizon of C.B. Dizon Design & Construction, Inc. who helped bring the unit full circle. If you’re planning to get your own space or thinking about revamping your home, here are elements and ideas we loved best in this beautiful labor of love:
Upon entrance to the unit, guests can see the lovely foyer and the home's main areas: the bedroom, the living area, the den, the kitchen, and the dining nook. According to the owner, three studio units make up the 48sqm space. To maximize the floor area and to achieve her vision of having an airy or maaliwalas home, each piece of furniture was carefully chosen–many of which were measured and customized to fit in the unit.
From the living area, the owner and her guests can easily access the kitchen or the den that's separated from the rest of the space with a sliding door.
RL Tip: An open layout avoids a cramped look and allows you to move around the house freely. Consider the placement of your furniture as well and the size of each before buying.
The owner admits that she often spends time in the den. To complete the space, a comfy couch is spruced up with throws and a bunch of pillows. Given this setup, it's not surprising why she enjoys watching movies and sleeping in the space. With a passion for traveling, the wall behind the seating piece serves as a gallery of snapshots from her trips and adventures.
RL Tip: If you're looking for ways to dress up a window at home, take inspiration from this den's chic Roman shades. The owner draws them down when she wants to watch a movie. Otherwise, these are drawn up to fill the space with natural light. As an alternative, you can also work with sheer drapes.
Notice the wall separating the den and the dining nook? It features a swinging TV panel so the owner and her guests can watch TV even while eating. Aside from working on the look of the dining space, she also prioritized storage. The customized bench by KC Interior Design Services has a storage compartment underneath for various essentials. The wall beside the table can also be used to hold decor and jars of sweet treats.
Even if the bedroom is small, it still exudes a sense of comfort, style, and elegance. A cabinet stands tall once you open the door while a compact vanity sits by the window. Many homeowners might be wondering how they can achieve a relaxing sleeping space in a tiny unit. The secret? Investing in the right bed. The owner considers her bed as the investment piece in the home–customized and with a upholstered headboard complete with nailhead trim.
RL Tip: Don't let a small bedroom stop you from having a rewarding slumber. Take your cue from this space by investing in the right must-haves–a sturdy and comfortable bed, ample storage, and fluffy furnishings. You may also want to paint the room in soothing colors like neutrals and blues.
To showcase the owner's love for the fall season, the kitchen highlights nifty details, wooden touches, and a stunning yellow backsplash. Even if the space is small, it's made more efficient with the cabinets, drawers, and an extended counter. The extra counter space can be used when preparing meals or as a breakfast nook.
RL Tip: Choosing the best kitchen layout for your space is crucial so you can work efficiently and make the most of the available area. To learn more the basic kitchen layouts, click here.
