In a tropical country like ours, a ceiling fan is almost a requirement in a home. It keeps the breeze flowing on humid days and balances the temperature in a space—not only that, you might be surprised to know that it can dramatically reduce your energy bills, too. To help you choose the best one for your home, here are a few key characteristics you should look for:

Mounting

Mounting a fan isn’t as simple as hooking it to the underside of your roof—you have to take the shape of the ceiling into consideration, too. If you have a ceiling that has a slope, you need to pick out something that comes with an angle mount or you might need to get an additional bracket if you have a decorative medallion.

Home style

Ceiling fans usually come in a variety of designs that matches different decorating styles and it is important to pick one that matches the rest of the space. If you can’t achieve a similar look, find something with the same hardware or finish so you can still easily incorporate it into your home.

Features

Ceiling fans aren’t just supposed to cool a space, it’s supposed to improve air circulation, too. As technology improves, more and more new options are introduced—how many gears does it have? Does it have reversible air-flow capabilities?—so be sure to choose something that fits your needs.

Size and Distance

Remember: the taller the ceiling, the bigger the fan should be. If your home has a ceiling over 10 feet, you might need to hire a pro to add an extension rod. Don’t forget to measure everything before going to the store to avoid size mishaps!

Lighting

Some ceiling fans come with lighting features while others don't. Think about whether you want a two-in-one piece for your space or you want an entirely different set up—everything depends on your preference.
