5 Things Every Living Room Must Have

Strike a balance between comfort and design with these essentials

Aside from the facade and the door, the living area sets the standard for whatever impression your guests might have of your home—that's probably why finding and refining the decor in this room can be daunting. To help you out, we've listed down five things you should make a beeline for while scouring the aisles of the department store. Check them out below:

1.  Rug

A beautiful area rug has the power to pull the entire look of a room together. Start by looking for a piece that covers 60% of the floor but still leaving enough space for the hardwood to peek out around the borders. Don't forget to factor in furniture, too! Make sure that all the items you own will fit within the carpet.

2.  Lamps

Most homeowners think that overhead lighting is enough to brighten up the space—in reality, however, that's never enough. A good rule of thumb to follow is to have at least two mood lights in the room to support fluorescent lamps. The smaller lamps can set the mood while the latter makes it functional for reading and such.

3.  Pillows

Nothing says cozy like a big pile of pillows. If you have a huge couch, a standard rule to follow is to place three pillows on each side with a few accent pieces in the middle. It's also best to mix prints and to stick to odd numbers to keep it from looking too perfect.

4. Throws

What's better than curling up in a thick throw while laying on your couch after a long day at work? Not only is it perfect for keeping you warm, it's great for adding character and finishing off your decor too. Always keep one strewn over your sofa to give your home a warm, lived-in vibe.

5. A few of your favorite things

You've heard us say it a million times before—your home should be a reflection of your personality. Showcase your passions and the things you love most by putting up your favorite things on display. From travel souvenirs, family heirlooms, or special gifts, you're free to use anything you like.
