Dressing up your home can be an exciting task

Be it starting a new job, performing on stage or skydiving, doing anything for the first time can be daunting—including decorating your home. While it may not bring as much adrenaline, it can be just as difficult and challenging but fun, too. To help you ease your way into the process, here are some styling tips to keep in mind:

1. Don't be afraid to work with hand-me-downs.

Just because you're moving into a new space, doesn't mean you have to use brand new furniture. Home fittings can cost a lot, especially if you're filling up a bare home. Go ahead and tell your parents, grandparents, or aunts and uncles that you'll be happy to get a few things off their hands.

2. Shop for only the essentials and wait out the rest.

If you don't know anyone who has spare furniture pieces and you're forced to buy new ones, streamline your shopping list to things you need—like the couch, a bed and a dining table. You can slowly buy the rest as you go through your decorating journey.

3. Avoid getting too excited with trends.

Since you're new at decorating, it can be easy to fall into the trap of following each and every trend you'll see in magazines or online. Make sure to only go with those that fit your personal style so your home doesn't lose character.

4. Don't buy things that will only work in one place.

In order to get value for your money, consider sticking to multipurpose pieces. Aside from being more practical, chances are, these smart must-haves will work for your future home (in case you're renting or planning on moving in a few years).

5. Don't compare your home to anybody else's.

Making an effort to dress up your home is great—you save pegs from different websites or regularly shop for decor—but don't get disheartened when it doesn't end up looking like a model unit. After all, your home should be a reflection of your personality, constantly evolving and it doesn't have to be perfect all the time.
