Putting a kitchen together from scratch is no joke—you have to think about choosing the right appliances, rethinking the layout, doing a couple of renovations and buying all sorts of cookware. It can be especially difficult when every brand and company is telling you that their product will make your life easier, too. To help you navigate through the process, we've put together a list of home elements that every beautifully functional kitchen should have. Check them out below:

1. A proper pantry

It doesn't have to be expensive or fancy—a stainless steel rack that keeps bottled and dry ingredients out in the open is enough! This will help you easily see what you need or what you are running out of. With this type of storage, you can either locate it in one corner or hide it in a cabinet.

2. A spacious island

Having an island can anchor a large and open space while adding function in the area—this is a great spot for prepping meals or making baked goods. Not only that, you can utilize the space underneath as storage so you have more room for your essentials.

3. A cabinet for China and silverware

If you entertain a lot, it's best to separate your everyday, knockabout dinnerware from your fancy China. Have a separate cabinet to protect seldom-used pieces like soup tureens, chargers and cake stands then keep often-used pieces in easy-to-reach places.

4. Open shelves for pots and pans

When cooking for a crowd or a big family, having open shelves and metal hooks for cookware can come in handy. These are sturdy enough to hold bulky pots and vats. Aside from that, keeping them out and handy is more efficient than stuffing them in a pile behind cabinet doors.

5. Large windows

It's always best to work with natural light—especially if you're working on something as delicate as food. Large windows will let the sun's rays in so you're able to see everything clearly. An open space can highlight your decor, too.
