5 Renovating and Decorating Mistakes to Avoid

Interior designer Peaches de Guzman-Grey reveals errors that homeowners make in building or renovating their spaces

When we were kids, growing up seemed like the coolest thing in the world. We dreamed of the time when we could eat whatever we want (ice cream for breakfast, anyone?), stay up all night, and do just about anything that we could think of. Unfortunately, being an adult is often more complicated than we thought it would be. For every pint of Rocky Road that we devour, every all-nighter that we pull, and every crazy adventure that we embark on, there are ten more challenges that we need to take on. One of the biggest responsibilities that we have to shoulder is the building, renovating or decorating of our own homes.

However, interior designer Peaches de Guzman-Grey says that if you are familiar with the do’s and don’ts of personalizing your place, the task can be surprisingly fun and fulfilling. In this special feature, she talks about the common mistakes that homeowners make – and how to avoid them.

Mistake No. 1: Creating a hazard-filled bathroom

Peaches reminds homeowners that the shower door should always swing out. In case of accidents, this will make it easier for someone to enter and offer help. To avoid mishaps in the bathroom, you must also use non-skid tiles.

Mistake No. 2: Installing pendant lights that are too high or too low

Install your pendant lights around 450mm from your dining table. This will illuminate your table better and create a dramatic feel.

Mistake No. 3: Mounting mirrors on the wrong wall

Mirrors are supposed to make rooms seem airy, bright, and spacious. However, if a mirror reflects the sun, your space can be hot and humid. Take note of where the sun rises and sets before you put a mirror up.

Mistake No. 4: Putting up paintings that are above or below eye-level

When hanging your favorite piece of art, Peaches says that you should first measure 5 feet from the floor and mark it. She explains that the middle of your painting should fall where the mark is so that it will be better seen and appreciated.

Mistake No. 5: Not allotting enough storage options

According to Peaches, homeowners should always have enough room for their belongings. Invest in cabinets and shelves that will keep your belongings neat and organized.
