Every homeowner knows there's so much that goes into remodeling jobs—especially when it comes to bathrooms. Not only will you plan the theme and the budget, you also need to think about the possibility of working with a professional. Just like in any other home improvement project, it's important to have a general knowledge of what to expect and what to consider. Whether you're planning to renovate your space or you're in the early stages of the whole process, here are some of the things you should be asking to make sure you end up with the T&B of your dreams:

1. "What will I use the bathroom for?”

Ask yourself what you usually do in the bath. If you’re sharing it with someone, take note of their preferences and habits, too. Decide on which activities you want to accommodate like dressing up, putting on makeup, reading, or even listening to music. Include furnishings that are needed to support these like bigger mirrors, better lighting, and a magazine rack, to name a few.

2. “What’s my decorating style?”

Do you like modern, rustic-industrial, contemporary, or shabby chic? Scour the Internet and collect photos of the spaces you like. Give these to your contractor so that he or she will have an idea on the type of design that reflects your personality best.

3. “How much time and money am I willing to spend for this project?”

Installing new cabinets can be done in one weekend, retiling may take more than a week, and replacing fixtures can take a day—depending on the size of the bathroom. Remember to take into account everything you’re going to buy for the project and the amount of work that needs to be done.

4. “Do I need to consult a professional?”

For large-scale projects like this one, the answer is always YES. Experienced plumbers can take a look at existing water and waste lines before installing new fittings; while architects and interior designers can suggest creative solutions you may not have thought of.

5. "How much space do I have to spare?"

Never sacrifice function for style. If going for a specific design will turn your bathroom into an inconvenient space, it might be a good idea to rethink your decision—make sure that your choices are practical for the long haul.
