Animal prints and skins, an arid atmosphere and an earthy palette—all these evoke the vibe of Africa. Simple, raw-edged lines, tribal patterns, weavings, and wood further take you to this rich country. Bring the primal look into urban interiors by mixing it with modern furniture. Excited to work with tribal artifacts? Start with these ideas:

1. Don't overkill.

Use prints only on small items such as throw pillows and accent chairs. A three-seater sofa in leopard print would be way too busy—especially for a tiny room.

2. Neutralize.

Keep the background plain and neutral. Choose warm, earth tones for your floors and walls.

3. Go natural.

Get accents that match the feel of your animal prints. Use clusters of reeds, wooden masks or carved stone pieces. If you want modern accessories, keep the lines simple.

4. Try bold.

For the truly brave, mix animal prints with strong colors—the combination is graphic and sexy. Try orange or fuchsia as fabric accents. Make black your dominant color—upholster your sofa in this hue.

5. Specie-fy.

Group prints according to their species. Keep the scaly reptiles away from the furry felines. Better yet, stick to one animal.
