While we’d love to have a clean and inviting living area all the time, it can be pretty hard to keep it spic-and-span given the number of items in the space. We spruce it up with photos, fill it with comfy must-haves, and even make an effort to style a vignette that can catch the attention of visitors.

Like many homeowners, you might be wondering how you can avoid eyesores while still keeping a welcoming and personal vibe. To help you get started, here are five ideas we loved from some of our featured homes. Save them as pegs for later or consider applying it in your own space as soon as you have free time:

1. Have fun with school supplies.

Those with empty walls can take a break from the usual paintings, framed photographs, and prints. Put your DIY skills to the test by working with a couple of school supplies, postcards, and a few magazine cutouts. Take inspiration from this living area wherein the owner lined up clipboards decorated with colorful prints. You can do the same or you can display Instax and Polaroid photos for a more playful and quirky appeal.

RL Tip: You can install the clipboards using wall hooks or strong adhesives. Just make sure it can carry the weight of the boards.

2. Showcase a vintage piece.

If you have an heirloom piece at home, the living area is the perfect place to highlight it. Use it as an accent item—to capture the attention of guests and kickstart a conversation. A vintage coffee table would look extra elegant in the middle of the room. However, if you have an old armoire or escritoire (writing desk), place it in one corner so as not to take up floor space.

3. Explore a new way of displaying art.

We often see paintings and artworks lined up on the wall, but you might be wondering if there are ways to showcase these without ruining the finish of your walls. Create an impact by lining them up on the floor instead. As an alternative, you may also want to display them on top of console tables.

4. Organize a stack of books.

If you love collecting books of different sizes and genres, you can use your collection as the focal point in your living area. Instead of buying big and bulky shelves that you often see, you can save on space and make wonderful book decor by opting for a slim one—similar to the one in the photo. Once you fill it with books, it would like you have a sturdy stack quietly sitting in a corner.

RL Tip: Feel free to experiment on which books to display—choose ones with colorful and quirky spines.

5. Choose a colorful couch.

Save on cash while creating impact by choosing furnishings and seating pieces in fun, colorful hues. Depending on the look you want to achieve, pastel colors and earth tones can give your living area a refreshing vibe. To keep it from looking too busy or overdecorated, make sure that your walls are painted in light, neutral shades.
