How can you improve a dark, gloomy, and old-fashioned townhouse? Interior decorator Elle Uy spruced up this young couple's three-storey house with bright colors and classic-meets-modern furniture pieces.

If you would also like to update a place that has seen better days (and better styles!), you may want to check out this starter home. Here are the five decorating ideas that we learned from this charming place:

Opt for a white dining set

If your home seems drab and dated, you may want to invest in a white dining set! You may also want to simply repaint the table and chairs that you already own.

RL Tip: You can even consider reupholstering the old seats with mint green or powder blue fabric.

Use the space under the stairs

Don't leave the space under the stairs empty! You can turn this bare corner into a reading nook or a home office. You may also want to furnish it with a flat-screen TV hanging above a white buffet table for dinnerware and other essentials.

Choose fully upholstered pieces with unexpected shades

Instead of choosing classic finds in neutral or muted shades, you may want to look for traditional pieces that have surprising colors.

For example, this living area is furnished with a Chesterfield sofa in yellow and a wing chair in light purple.

RL Tip: If you can't seem to find fully upholstered pieces with youthful colors, you may simply want to look for throw pillows with playful hues.

Search for clear furniture pieces

You may also want to purchase clear furniture pieces! Clear furniture pieces like bar stools and Ghost chairs have a fun, quirky, and playful appeal. Since they seem to take up less space, they are also perfect for small homes.

Create a photo wall with white, blue, and green frames

If you would like to create a simple, budget-friendly, and personalized focal point, you can always create a photo wall. For an interesting effect, you can look for picture frames in white, blue, and green.

RL Tip: Not a fan of white, blue, and green? You can also try white, gray, and pink!
