5 Ideas For Your Sitting Area

Create one in style, whether it's a living area or a simple nook

We spend a lot of time sitting down. If you have an office job, you sit in front of your computer for eight to ten hours (or even more). And when you get home, you plop on your sofa and put your feet up as you try to unwind by watching your favorite show. Thus, it is important to have comfortable sitting areas at home so you can rest, relax, or read your favorite book in peace. Here are some ideas:

1. Clean and simple living area

If you want a no-fuss but stylish sitting area, get a boxy or rectangular sofa and pair it with other clean-lined furniture. Add warmth with a low-pile rug. If you want to inject a bit more personality, you can add repurposed, vintage pieces or pop art. Add more impact to the clean and simple look by situating the sitting area beside a window where a lot of natural light flows through.

2. Casual vintage corner

Got furniture handed down to you by your mom or lola? Use them as they are—let the scratches or bumps tell a story. This sitting area is also a no-fuss one—throw pillows and a throw make it cozy, and the Persian rug adds to the old world look. Place sheer curtains on your window to filter natural light without completely blocking it off.

3. Mid-century modern living area

The silhouettes of mid-century modern furniture alone are stylish enough that you don’t need a lot of knickknacks to jazz them up. Complement the space with a floor lamp with flexible arm and a few accessories to add color.

Get similar pieces at Space Encounters, Unit B Mezzanine, Padilla Bldg., F. Ortigas Jr. Road, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

4. Modern-Pinoy reading nook

You don’t have to use rattan pieces—solid wood furniture can be a sturdier (and more durable) alternative. In this setup, a café table, a bookshelf, and a floor lamp from Triboa Bay Living exude Pinoy designer flair. If you have statement-making pieces like these, use a simple chair so it will not compete with the other pieces.

Visit Triboa Bay Living at LRI Design Plaza, 210 N. Garcia St., Makati City and at 4/L Mega Fashion Hall, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.

5. Eclectic living area

Experiment with different accessories to find what goes well with your sofa. The variety of elements in this living area makes it interesting. The sisal rug adds warmth and texture, while the fur throw makes the soft couch even more comfy. Exercise restraint in accessorizing—too much elements can make your sitting area cluttered.

Find an Arco-style floor lamp at Steltz, 6/L East Wing, Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong City.
