Whether you're a history buff or the complete opposite, you can't deny that there is something special about heritage homes that is guaranteed to pique your interest. After all, one won't be able to appreciate the present without looking back at the past.

Be it old buildings, restaurants or restored homes, these places are rich in character, culture and life lessons that no textbook can match—it is important that all of us experience what it's like to live in the golden days, even in a modern setting. If you've always been fascinated by the beauty of yesteryear, here are a few ancestral spots that deserve a second look:

Guevarra's

Guevarra's, the heritage house-turned-restaurant, is named after historical figure Pedro Guevarra (a Filipino soldier, a lawyer, and a politician). A popular attraction on this end of the famous street, the restaurant has a lovely facade and charming interiors that can instantly take you to a different era.

Owned and operated by Seven Plates Inc.—with Chefs Rolando and Jackie Laudico—Guevarra's is known for its superb Filipino spreads and an ambiance that matches its vintage interiors.

Kapitan Moy Residence

If you don't want to go too far, Kapitan Moy Residence is conveniently located in Marikina—perfect for a quick, weekend visit. The popular ancestral house is still sporting majestic columns, capiz windows, and an exterior that we only get to see in pictures. It used to be an elementary school during the American Colonial Period and after the Second World War—today, it serves as a prime reception venue for both locals and tourists.

La Casita Mercedes

For a laidback weekend getaway, La Casita Mercedes is the best option. This charming bed and breakfast in the heart of Makati was originally built as a home in 1933. Before being converted to a hotel, three generations of one family have lived within its walls.

The house has retained much of its period features like the filigree detailing on the media agua and the original capiz windows and wooden siding with mill work, a true sign of timeless Filipino design.

Quezon Heritage House

Just beside the complex of Max’s and Tropical Hut is the Quezon Heritage House. Almost hidden from plain sight by the main parking lot, this yellow-and-cream, two-storey house is a beautiful example of neoclassical revival design.

In 2013, the Quezon City government worked on the transfer and reconstruction of the family house in Gilmore to its current site in the Circle. About 60% of the structure and interiors are from the original house, with furniture and memorabilia donated by the Quezon family.

Villa Milagros

In the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains, you'll find an elegant white mansion aptly named Villa Milagros. It took five years (1965 to 1969) to build the grand house that used to be the home of Isidoro Buenviaje Liamzon and Ma. Milagros Manahan Liamzon.

Located in Rodriguez, Rizal, the opulent mid-century classical revival mansion occupies 700sqm of the one hectare lot. Five bedrooms, a graceful driveway, a grand spiral staircase, a lookout tower, front and back terraces complete the one-of-a-kind property.
