5 Double-Duty Pieces For Small Homes

It's as simple as maximizing what you already own!

If you ask interior designers and style enthusiasts about their secret to decorating small spaces, they would most likely tell you that investing in compact and multitasking furniture makes the difference.

While it would be simpler to buy custom-made pieces, there are some homeowners who are working with a limited budget and would rather save good money for the future. If this is the case, you could always get creative and make the pieces that you already own work to your advantage. Check out our list of double-duty pieces that you may already have at home:

1. Bar Carts

These portable carts are one of the most underrated items at home. Aside from being a serving station, the possibilities are endless with this versatile piece—it can be an alternative shelf for books, a storage system for shoes, a nightstand, and even as a makeshift chest for stuffed animals in the playroom.

RL Tip: Find similar pieces and other designs at Crate and Barrel!

2. Wooden Stools

If you think this basic piece is just for seating, maybe it's time to explore a few out-of-the-box ideas. You can use it to hold bath time essentials or a spot to set-up a country-inspired vignette. Bonus: it can add a rustic charm to any space.

RL Tip: You can get your hands on a few of these chairs at Shack Furniture in Greenhills!

3. Ottomans

Instead of taking up a lot of floor space with bulky coffee tables, consider using an ottoman and let it serve as the focal point in your living area—you can even go as far as finding a unit that comes with hidden storage where you can keep extra throws and pillows. For parties and get-togethers, you can simply set the decor aside and use it as extra seating, too.

RL Tip: West Elm carries a lot of storage ottomans you can choose from!

4. Bookcases

Maximize huge shelves by making it double as a room divider for shared spaces. Experiment with placing it between the dining and living areas, or the laundry spot and kitchen. You can set-up vignettes for added flair or make it extra functional by adding woven bins for home essentials.

RL Tip: Visit PHILUX Home in BGC to see their wide selection of bookcases and hanging shelves!

5. Lounge Chairs

No space for a real bed? No problem. You can easily transform napping chairs into futons by adding thick blankets and fluffy pillows. If you're having guests over, you can hide your bedtime must-haves from plain sight and let your lounge chair serve as a couch.

RL Tip: You can find a ton of lounge chairs at Pottery Barn where you can unwind at the end of the day!
