5 Dos and Don'ts of Painting Plastic Furniture

Give your patio seating a successful makeover with these tips

Is your outdoor furniture looking a little lackluster? Instead of buying an all-new set, consider giving it a facelift with a little bit of paint. Start planning your weekend project and be guided by these helpful ideas:

DO clean your chairs before painting them.

Having a dirt-free base can help make sure that the paint will adhere smoothly to your chairs. Simply hose down any dust or use a sponge to scrub off any build up, and allow them to dry completely in the sun.

DO skip priming.

Plastic is an absorbent material and doesn't need any form of priming as pigment sticks to it. However, if you want to play it safe, use oil-based primers just to make sure that the paint will not chip off any time soon.

DON'T worry about the finish.

Whether you use glossy, stain, or matte, there is usually no noticeable difference once you paint it on plastic. It will all eventually set to a demi-matte so feel free to play with colors.

DON'T be afraid to mix different shades.

Go crazy when picking out color combinations! Feel free to experiment with different effects, too—you can try paint-dipped, metallic, or even stripes!

DO wait for the first coat to dry.

To avoid a splotchy finished product, be patient when it comes to waiting for layers to dry. It takes around 30 minutes to an hour for paint to set before you can add another coat.
