What is a color wheel? You might have encountered this term in art class back in grade school or when you’re helping your kids with their art projects. To refresh your memory, here are a few pointers to remember:

1. A color wheel is a guide used in color theory, which is relevant in visual design. The wheel has 12 hues grouped into primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

2. Primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. They are the basic, pure colors. They are not made by mixing any other color.

3. Secondary colors are a mix of two primary colors. They are orange (red + yellow), green (blue + yellow), and violet (blue + red).

4, Tertiary colors are formed when you combine secondary colors. Tertiary colors are red violet, blue violet, blue green, yellow green, yellow orange, and red orange.

5. Complementary colors are colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel, like violet and yellow and red and green. If you’re new to combining colors, or you’re not sure which colors you can use to create a color scheme at home, you might want to give complementary colors a try.
