Without a doubt, the balcony is one of the most versatile areas at home. It can serve as a reading nook, an extension of the living or dining area, or even as an extra storage space for your essentials. Given this, it’s only practical to be ready with tons of storage solutions and creative tricks.

Whether you’re storing gardening tools, outdoor must-haves, or your kids’ toys—here are five quick and easy ways to keep this part of the home clean and spotless:

1. Have a customized bench.

Turn your seating piece into a multipurpose must-have by asking a trusted carpenter to add a secret storage compartment. It can have a removable lid so you can store extra pillows, boots, and even some of your cleaning tools.

2. Opt for a seating and shelf combo.

If you love showcasing your potted plants and blooms, you may opt for a seating piece with an overhead shelf. An open shelf allows you to display mini pots of succulents and herbs to turn your outdoor nook into a refreshing space.

RL Tip: If possible, choose a piece with wood slats—similar to the one in the photo. This will allow you to add rods and hooks to accommodate more planters.

3. Build an industrial-inspired shelf.

Those who are using the balcony as an entertainment space and reading nook may opt to create a DIY industrial shelf using wooden crates and indsutrial pipes. Maximize space by opting for a floor-to-ceiling piece. Alternate the items you'll display by mixing and matching decor, plants, and your favorite reads.

RL Tip: If you prefer the aesthetic of the shelf in the photo, don't waste the space by installing wooden planks—these would allow you to add a few more knickknacks to liven up your shelf.

4. Work with a movable coffee table.

Those who have a compact balcony to work with may want to practice their creative skills! With just a few wooden pallets, caster wheels, and your trusty tools—you can create one on your own. To have an idea how to go about it, you can check out this tutorial.

RL Tip: You can paint your finished project or maintain a distressed finish for a rustic appeal. Once you're done with the finishing touches, you can decorate it with a tray of catchalls on top and use the compartment to store books and other items.

5. Upcycle an old metal rack.

Do you have an old shelf or shoe rack lying around the house? Clean it thoroughly and place it outside. Fill the racks with properly labeled metal pails or plastic bins. Use these containers to store tools, toys, cleaning must-haves, and other outdoor items.
