Do you sleep and entertain guests in one area? Does your main door lead directly to the kitchen or dining area? You can create and enjoy different areas in your small unit by properly segregating the space. There's no need to build walls and columns as you can improve the layout of your space with the help of budget-friendly ideas. Here are tips from design professionals to guide you:

Use partitions

“Because there is a limited amount of space in your room, you risk showing things you would rather conceal. What you can do is [use] partitions [to hide] things. I suggest using plain frosted glass or a partition finished in the same material as your kitchen cabinets. But if you just want a sense of division, try wooden slats to keep your space open.” – Issa Villar, Stylist

Separate rooms using furniture

“You can simply add a console table between your living and dining area to define your space. Also, you can separate your bedroom from the rest of the space by adding divider screens or curtains. Another alternative can be using shelves to separate your rooms.” – Interior designers Kristine Neri-Magturo and Kimi Manuel

Decorate with rugs

“For those who opt for an open layout, using area rugs to divide the space is a good idea. You can place an area rug in the living room and another textured one near your entryway. Good quality area rugs are a bit pricey but will last longer than the cheaper ones.” – Interior designer Cristine Legasca
