The upholstery of your seats—may it be a couch, an armchair, or a sofa, should be able to withstand excessive use. Upholstered pieces are prone to wear and tear—especially if you have kids and pets at home.

Since these are found in areas with heavy traffic like the dining and living areas, it is important that we maintain the quality of these home must-haves. Let these four handy hints guide you.

Locate your pieces properly

The location of your seating furniture may affect the wear and tear of fabric. Upholstered furniture placed under direct sunlight may easily fade.

Since we cannot avoid placing furniture near the window—especially in the living area, you may opt for durable fabrics that can withstand heat. You may also add curtains to help shield it from the sun.

Get textiles that are easy to clean

Having kids at home makes your couch prone to spills. Cotton, cotton- blend, and leather are examples of natural fabrics that are easy to maintain. You can also use synthetic fabrics like nylon, microfiber, and acrylic.

Always check the fabric grade when reupholstering

Grade “A” textiles are less expensive, while “F” ones are pricey. Variables factored in grading textiles include intricacy of weave, construction, and fiber content. You must also consider the strength of the fabric. Make sure you choose at least 15,000 double rubs for everyday seating furniture. Keep in mind that the higher the double rub, the more durable it is.

Use a fabric protector

Keep your upholstery in tip-top shape with spray-on fabric protector like 3M’s Scotchgard Fabric and Upholstery Protector (available at major hardware stores). Such products repel liquids and block stains without damaging the fabric.
