4 Ways To Achieve an Eclectic Vibe at Home

Mix and match different styles and elements to achieve a one-of-a-kind space

Eclectic design is all about mixing several elements or styles. You can upgrade your space by working with what you already have.

However, achieving an eclectic style is often tricky because if you over do it, it will look messy. “The goal is to use different styles that have an artistic taste to connect it to an overall design," shares interior designer Katrina Recomite. Learn how to style your eclectic space with these few tips.

Keep these tips in mind:

Use the design ratio.

“One can achieve a balanced look by trying the 60%-30%-10% design ratio,” Katrina suggests. The 60%-30%-10% ratio means 60% of the dominant color, 30% of the secondary color and 10% of the accent color. After you’ve chosen a color palette, your walls will be the dominant color of your room. Then the secondary color is for your furniture and the accent is for your accessories.

RL Tip: Check the color wheel to see the different color harmonies that can match your room.

Create a common ground.

“Look for a particular connective element to anchor the space,” Katrina says. If you have both Italian and Chinese wooden furniture, place them together! It doesn’t necessarily have to be ‘matchy-matchy’, just make sure they have the same proportions.

Work with what you have.

The key to making the eclectic look work is utilizing old and new furniture, which you already have. By using different textures, you don’t have to necessarily stick to one element! You can mix all your favorite themes to create your own look.

Use special pieces sparingly.

Don’t put all your special furniture in one room, because it will lose its ‘wow’ factor. “Turn your favorite piece into an accent, to utilize what you love most," suggests Katrina.

RL Tip: An eclectic style mirrors the element of surprise. Try adding unexpected accents to your space by showcasing your vintage travel memorabilia.
