Do you have family heirlooms or antique furniture sitting in the attic or garage? Keep in mind that if you leave them inside boxes, they may be damaged by dust and rust.

Proper storage is the key to preserving such pieces. Here are a few tips to help you store ceramics, decorations, artwork, and furniture.

Keep these tips in mind:

Cover furniture with drop cloth

To protect antique chairs from heat and dust, wrap it with thick drop cloths. Place the cloth on the floor then set the piece at the middle. Gather the edges and wrap it like a present. You may secure the gaps using duct tape.

Place holiday decorations in cardboard boxes

Keep garlands and Christmas lights in cardboard boxes to preserve its quality. Secure cords properly to avoid tangles and missing bulbs. Avoid storing them in high moisture areas.

Use bubble wrap for ceramic glassware

Avoid stacking four to five plates together to avoid chips, scratches, and broken pieces. Wrap each piece individually using bubble wrap and place them inside compartmentalized containers.

RL Tip: If you are keeping plates inside kitchen cabinets, you may place paper plates in between ceramic plates to avoid scratches. Click here for more tips on storing dinnerware.

Wrap artwork using acid-free paper

Wrap your prized artworks using acid-free paper and place foam boards in between pieces. Secure them with tape and put the label in front. Avoid keeping unframed artworks in enclosed areas as it will cause the paper to become brittle.
