To be able to add a unique personal touch to our space, we sometimes choose to do DIY projects. These projects can be simple decor pieces or mini home improvement undertakings.

If you're planning to go DIY all the way, interior designer Ayet San Jose-Aniag shares these helpful tips.

Start small

If it's your first time to work on your home on your own, don't start with major projects like building a wall or replacing a ceiling! Start by working on small projects like decor pieces and updating the look of some of your furniture.

"Start with accessories or accents first—these are budget-friendly and easy-to-do," Ayet shares.

Work on what interests you

What's your favorite area of the home? If it’s the garden, you may work on projects involving terracotta pots. If you love hanging out in the kitchen, you may update the look of your cabinets using washi tape.

There are plenty of ideas that you can do to give your space an upgrade. Start with an area that you love before moving on to other home projects.

Find inspiration

“[Choosing to do] DIY [projects]  gives us the freedom to do things on our own,” Ayet shares. Look for similar projects online to see how others are doing it. You can also join craft workshops and seminars so you can get advice from fellow DIY enthusiasts and experts.

Leave major projects to professionals

Major renovations such as painting the whole house or doing electrical works, should be done by a professional. You need to be fully aware of the safety needs and labor efforts that a project entails so you may want to consider consulting a contactor as well.
