4 Tips in Creating a His-and-Hers Closet

Avoid squabbles with your partner by assigning specific spots for your stuff

Sharing a closet with our spouse or partner can sometimes be the cause of petty disagreements. Clothes get mixed up, or one may be complaining about the number of shirts or pants that the other has. Save yourselves (and your relationship!) from stress—here are a few tips to create a fine line between your respective closet spaces.

1. Put a mark between your side of the closet and his.

Whether you want an equal division of space, or you decide that one side is bigger than the other, create that mark and make sure it is visible. Paint your rod or put colored tape to separate which side belongs to who.

2. Label drawers.

If your closet has built-in drawers, label all of them so you won’t get stressed looking for that watch or that handkerchief. You can also assign specific drawers for yourself and for your partner so your belongings won’t get mixed up.

3. Corral little items using trays.

Put your necklaces, bracelets, and other accessories on trays or small baskets so they won’t be scattered in your closet or drawer. You can also use small baskets to store scarves, shawls, and handkerchiefsfolded neatly, of course.

4. Declutter your closet and get rid of your old clothes.

All the abovementioned tips won’t work if you have too many belongings that you’re cramming in one closet. Let go of clothes you don’t wear anymore; same with bags you no longer use. Hold a garage sale or donate these itemssomeone else might appreciate them and put them to good use.
