4 Female Designers Who Shaped the World

Modern design—interiors, architecture, furniture—wouldn’t be the same without these amazing women

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we give you four women who helped shape the design world. We bet you didn’t know that the hot designer chair you were eyeing—or even the office desk you were sitting at—were designed by women!

Zaha Hadid

This London-based Iraqi architect is the first woman to win the prestigious architectural award—the Pritzker Prize. She is known for her bold, deconstructivist, gravity-defying designs, and created many buildings and institutions including the New Beijing Airport.

Ray Eames

Though Ray was more known as the wife of furniture designer Charles Eames, she collaborated with him in creating many iconic pieces such as the molded plywood Lounge Chair Wood and Metal. She is also a noted artist and fabric designer. You can find Eames furniture locally at

Eileen Gray

In an era when houses were decorated in frilly Victorian styles of the last century, this Irish interior designer made waves by creating sleek, modern interiors that shocked visitors at the Paris International Exhibition. She designed one of the most copied tables in history, the E1027 Table, and even though it was created in the 1920s, it still looks great now.

Florence Knoll

She studied under design icons Eliel Saarinen and Mies van der Rohe. Together with her husband Hans Knoll, they founded Knoll Associates, one of the biggest manufacturers of modern furniture, and created the first office furniture systems. Her designs from the 1950s are still used today. You can find Knoll locally from CWC Interiors.
