4 Easy Ways to Decorate a Bare Condo Unit

Turn plain and boring into fab and inviting with these tips

Nothing beats the feeling of stepping into a newly turned over unit. After investing your hard-earned money in a space you can truly call your own, the next step would be to transform it into a bright and welcoming home you've always dreamed of. If you're planning to design and complete your unit on your own, here are a few things to remember:

1. Keep proportion in mind.

It might be more convenient and sometimes, cheaper to buy an off-the-floor furniture piece especially when it comes to cabinets but, having a custom-made, built-in piece actually makes a space bigger. It's also more space-saving in the long run.

In this 22sqm unit designed by TKSL Interior Design, a huge built-in cabinet occupies an entire wall of the compact space. It serves as a pantry, closet, and shoe storage in one. Click here to see more photos.

2. Stick to a color.

For a not too drastic change in your condo, you can consider changing the colors of your walls. As turnover units are usually primed, you can use latex paint with low-VOC for a weekend project.

If you want to achieve a relaxing tropical-feel, you may want to choose neutral colors paired with shades of blue and green. Take inspiration from this one-bedroom unit designed by Espasyo Manila. Click here to see more photos.

3. Invest in double duty furniture.

Sometimes, a limited floor area will force a homeowner to get creative with the space. When shopping for furniture, opt for double duty pieces that would mesh well with the look of your unit. Don't forget to measure the area where you intend to place the pieces just to make sure that it will fit.

In this 48sqm unit designed by a Real Living reader, most of the pieces were customized to avoid a cramped look. The living and den areas can be transformed into sleeping spaces to accommodate guests when needed. Click here to see more photos.

4. Start a mini garden.

If you have the luxury of a balcony in your space, you can grow a vertical garden with herbs and indoor plants. These greens can make food even more flavorful and help you maximize the space you have. Aside from herbs, you can also have indoor plants like Boston Fern and Peace Lilies to help improve the air quality at home.
