Makeover stories don't just inspire us to improve our spaces—they give us ideas on how we can actually turn a dark and messy area into a functional nook that you would love to stay in!

Aside from going over our memorable transformation stories, why not schedule a quick makeover that you can work on this weekend? Interior designer Hannah Acab-Faustino shares four easy ways on how you can breathe new life into your bedroom:

Prioritize function

Always think about how you move and how you can make the most of every inch of available space. Function should be on top of your list instead of design. You may have a stylish space but you can't finish your morning routine—you won't be able to fully maximize your room. This can help you plan the layout of your furniture as well.

Liven up the space with a mix of patterns

Prints and patterns can instantly brighten up a room. Consider working with geometric patterns and even horizontal stripes to make your room seem wider and bigger. If you're sharing your room with a sibling, Hannah suggests working with organic and geometric patterns. "Mixing geometric lines keeps the look from being too feminine, and also balances the whole look," she explains.

Add a simple splash of color

Sometimes, your room can look dull because it lacks color. You don't necessarily have to paint one wall with a bold hue, you may opt for simple touches like colorful linen and pillows. Make sure that the colors work well with the overall palette of your room. If you are ready to work on a major project, you may create an accent wall

Do an easy furniture upgrade

You don’t need to buy new furniture to give your room a brand new look. Be practical by repurposing and upcycling the pieces that you already have. Hannah suggests customizing the bed's headboard with fabric. You can also repaint an old side table or update the look of an old lampshade.
