When it comes to adding storage at home, shelves are always on top of the list because it allows you to keep things in place while displaying some of your favorite things. But how do you keep these clean and organized? Many of us are guilty of leaving too much stuff such as loose change, keys, and chargers—that turn it into an eyesore that makes the home look cramped and disorganized.

If you have wall-mouonted shelves at home, you can display your favorite things while adding one or two accent pieces without turning it into visual clutter. To inspire you to transform your shelf, here are inspiring photos—as seen in Real Homes:

Add a pop of color

Open shelves may look plain and boring against a blank wall. Inject life into your room by painting the wall where the shelves are installed. Make sure that you choose a shade that goes well with your home's overall color scheme.

If painting the wall seem too drastic, you can add decor pieces in vibrant shades instead such as bright yellow bookends and blue frames.

Opt for interesting textures

If you have a unique wall at home with wall treatments like a brick wall, you may choose to install your open shelves there. Once the planks are secure, you can create a vignette featuring a couple of books, decor, and framed prints.

Consider working with a theme! For example, create a New-York inspired feel by choosing items that represent The Big Apple. You can do this per destination or even according to your favorite book!

Make space for additional storage options

If you need to keep your keys and other personal belongings in an accessible spot, chances are, you like to keep them on the shelf. Avoid a cluttered look by adding catchalls, small woven baskets, or a mini tray where you can place these items. Style them in one corner and add a few mini plants to create a refreshing look.
