We're used to hearing the phrase "less is more." To counter this, there's also "less is a bore," coined by American architect Robert Venturi. This very well applies to those who love the maximalist style.

In simpler terms, the maximalist style is a creative mix of patterns, colors, and textures which results in a uniquely decorated space that's full of character. If you want to experiment with this style, interior designer Peaches de Guzman-Grey shares a list of must-dos to help you ace this look:

Mix and match

One common mistake of those who go for a maximalist style is making it look cluttered.  “When styling a maximalist home, everything is just [a] matter of mixing and matching items,” says Peaches. Examine all of your items and see if a furniture piece can work well with an accessory then try to display them together.

You may also experiment by moving around your furniture to see where you can place it best.

Learn how to achieve balance

To perfect the maximalist look, you need to know how to keep things in proportion. Get started by using the design ratio. It follows this formula: 60 percent dominant color, 30 percent secondary color, and 10 percent accent color. If applied at home, this means that your walls should have the dominant color, your furniture as the secondary color, and your accessories as accent colors.

Make sure you have a unifying element or piece

“There should always be a sense of cohesiveness in your design,” suggests Peaches. You can achieve this by picking out your color scheme, patterns, and details wisely. Consider going for an eclectic design but choose elements that are bolder, more elegant, and more sophisticated.
