3 Design Hacks To Mixing Wood Finishes

When in doubt, white it out!

Out of all the furniture styles and finish trends, wood is probably the only mainstay in the world of interior design. After taking a step back during the decade of yellow shellacked stains and steel elements, it is making a major comeback.

Especially now that rustic looks are all the rage, it's all about working with exposed, real, and raw pieces. If you're wondering how you can let it be the star of the living area, we've listed down three tips you can try:

Pair cool and warm undertones together

There are no rules to matching varying types of wood, but try to make sure that they complement each other. The trick is to check the color bias of the wood—cool usually means darker washes and warm for lighter shades—before matching them together. Using a lot of either one all at once can make a space look dull.

Add a buffer piece

If you don't have the option to mix washes together, consider breaking up a monotonous space with texture. You can add something in between such as rugs, runners, and patterned throws. Aside from smoothening the transition between two wooden pieces, it also adds a nice layer of color.

Balance it out with white

Since wood is neutral by nature and unpredictable in detail, it can already make a statement on it's own. If you're not too keen on adding a lot of earthy touches in your space, you can do it sparingly by matching it with white walls or lighter-colored accesories.
