What are your must-dos during weekends? Aside from cleaning and decluttering your space, we're sure that you're making the most of the quick break—resting, reading, and just lounging around the house. If you have a small outdoor area, you can transform it into a cozy lanai where you can relax and entertain guests.

Interior designer John Vigilia shares these quick tips for your lanai or patio.

  • Extend your living space

"A well-designed balcony or lanai can serve the purpose of extending the indoor space to the outdoors," John shares.

  • Opt for seating pieces and outdoor tables that can be used for gatherings

If you love hosting parties at home, it is important that you have extra chairs and tables to accommodate guests. You must also choose quality pieces and materials—there are different kinds of outdoor furniture and it pays if you're familiar with the common ones.

"Accessories would be more limited as you do not want to constantly expose those items under our changing weather, or else they will discolor or get damaged," the designer explains.

  • Choose pieces made of weather-resistant materials, like plastic or coated metal

Before buying garden furniture, you must do some research first. Aside from going for pretty chairs, take into consideration the built and strength of material as well. "Also, use outdoor fabric, as ordinary fabrics will fade. Teak is an outdoor material, but it will fade under the weather and you would have to constantly refinish it," John says.
